1847: Rutherford B. Hayes decided to volunteer to serve in the Mexican War, but his doctors advised against it, saying that the climate would not be good for his health. Most of the soldiers in the company he would have joined died.
1849: James Polk’s diarrhea worsened; fever and dehydration marked the final two weeks of his life.
